Peter and Carrie Sherrill
Carrie and Peter Sherrill have always loved playing with words. Peter is a retired physician, woodworker, stained glass artist, guitarist, father and grandfather. His undergraduate degree is in English. Carrie is a retired nurse, caterer, master gardener, mother and grandmother. She has a degree with an emphasis in Creative Writing. Ellen Kort, Wisconsin’s first Poet Laureate was very influential in both of their writing journeys. They share their love of the language with others as co-hosts of Art/Speaks, an ekphrastic writing workshop sponsored by Write On, Door County. They’ve hosted writers’ retreats, writers’ groups and poetry classes for Learning in Retirement in Door County. They have written poems for occasions upon request and have read their works throughout Door County.
Carrie and Peter are the current Poets Laureate of Door County (2025-2027). In that role, they make it a priority to expose as many people as possible to plain language poetry. They’ve won a few contests, and have appeared in some state and regional zines and anthologies, but are more focused on the art of writing than on publishing credentials. They live in a hundred-year-old farmhouse in southern Door County.
